Wheke Boss Battle

In this battle you fight a giant octopus, Te Wheke a Muturangi. He is semi submerged, and sits in the middle of the battle ground, while his arms move around attacking. Maybe Muturangi sits on the top of the his head, controlling the motion?

This is a level in which some kind of forest creature has asked for help in defeating the wheke. Let’s say it’s a type of monkey. As you are attacking the wheke, the monkeys are also sort of swarming, and grabbing onto the arms. If the player just sits and watches, he’ll see the monkeys ineffectually grab onto the limbs and get flung off again, and again. They will never win (they are there for show, and as a hint).

What happens is that if you use stasis on a limb, the monkeys swarm over it and either drag the limb into a hole or lash it down to the ground, so it can no longer move. If you use the bubble attack, the limbs float upward into the forest canopy where the monkeys grab hold and tie vines around it so it can’t move.

Alternately, destroy the limbs using fire.

The goal is to reach the head and/or Muturangi which you can only do if you get rid of the limbs. Maybe you’re supposed to steal some talisman which Muturangi uses to control the wheke. The player can also simply kill the wheke.

Once that’s done, the monkeys are free and Muturangi is shamed. Maybe he’s imprisoned, or turned to wood by the forest goddress?

Maybe later in the game you get a reward for either killing or sparing the wheke – if you kill him, some enemy of his gives you something, if you spare him then he’ll give you something later.

  1. Remember there are no monkeys in New Zealand- or any kind of mammal apart from bats. There’s no snakes either. So when including native wildlife in your game remember you have the choice of birds, bats or very small lizards

  2. Yes! You’re completely correct Aroha, and I didn’t know that when I wrote this. I know this now though. The only mammals, other than some marine mammals, are bats. Thanks for keeping me on my toes though, I appreciate it!
